Bize is ideally situated for exploring the local area, it is 2 kilometres off the Carcassonne to Beziers road and is sheltered by the surrounding hills. The Canal du Midi is quite close by where you can walk and cycle or indeed just sit and have lunch at one of the many restaurants and watch the boats drift by. There is also boat hire at Le Somail, a beautiful little village on the canal which is only 15 minutes away. This area is very popular with cyclists and walkers. We are in the foothills of the Montagne Noir where there are numerous walks, pretty villages and places of interest around every bend in the road. You may wish to bring bikes or to hire them here: we can store them safely in the garage.
Within the Bize area you will find the Chateau Cabezac with its wine tastings and just next to it L’Oublio, an olive farm with a visitor centre. Going north of the village there is the Ranch les Appaloosas for the riding enthusiasts and further along the road a goat farm, La Ferme des Combebelles, which produces local goat’s cheese. There are many roadside stalls selling seasonal fruit and vegetables, fresh and juicy, tasting totally different to the mass produced.
There are many medieval towns and Cathar castles in the area, the closest of which is Minerve, selected as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The most beautiful villages of France). It is perched high above a deep gorge where the rivers meet through tunnels below the ground. There are wonderful walks that skirt the edge of the cliffs and natural bridges which provide the ideal background to the sun and light festival in the summer months. Almost all the local towns have interesting churches and buildings dating back to the Middle Ages.
Carcassonne is of course a ‘must do’. It is only 45minutes away and can be combined with a lovely drive around the minervois villages on the way back.
From here you can be in Spain, the Pyrenees or Provence in less than two hours
